Catherine McQuade and Way Dynamic
recent interviews
Catherine McQuade has a new album out called The Corruption Of Memory. A fellow traveller of Dave Graney and Clare Moore from the early 80s Melbourne music scene. She was in the Ears (the band portrayed in the movie Dogs In Space) and then Deckchairs Overboard and then? A fashion shop in Sydney and then re entering Melbourne and the music world several years ago. The Corruption Of Memory is her third solo album. Very sophisticated music in the writing, recording and execution. Its not indie music but she works independently. Informed by jazz and R&B and film scores. Wonderful sounds. Here is the 23 minute interview.
I think its best to start with Catherines most recent work, she makes incredible videos with her film making partner Brendan Young.
Catherine has collaborated with us a few times. She mixed a song called THEY WALK AMONG US for our 2024 album, (strangely)(emotional).
I also wrote the lyrics and sang on a song Catherine wrote the music for. YOU CAME TO ME IN A DREAM.
Catherine as bass player for THE EARS in 1980 Melbourne. The band portrayed in the film DOGS IN SPACE. The clip is made by the writer and director of that film, Richard Lowenstein. Probably filmed in the same Richmond house.
Catherine later in the 80s in the band Deckchairs Overboard.
I also interviewed Melbourne player/artiste/project WAY DYNAMIC recently.
A very cagey character. I have been keeping up with his output over the last few years. He makes incredibly catchy music. Very well written and produced. Soft rock? Mostly. He didn’t give much away easily in the interview. But what do I know? Only what a person tells me, to be honest. Perhaps he doesn’t like to talk too much. I love the music. They did one show in Melbourne upon its release, which is quite common in Melbourne’s indie scene. This is the third Way Dynamic album.
Here is the 34 minute interview.
People Settle Down was the single. (When I played it through the next clip Youtube chose to play was HELLO ITS ME by Todd Rundgren which was actually quite the perfect fit! )
From the previous WAY DYNAMIC album, DUCK.
Dylan Young is Way Dynamic. Of course I told him he could be making a sweet and easy living in the AMERICANA scene with that name. A multi instrumentalist. Also, its Dylan Thomas Young. (Many people probably have sleepless nights trying to dream up names like this). I later learned he was also in - or perhaps is still a part of - TOTALLY MILD. I looked for a clip and was shocked to find our friend and ex Moodists guitarist Steve Miller in the video.
All the WAY DYNAMIC albums are at Bandcamp.
Dylan Young is also a member of SNOWY BAND. Who are led by SNOWY who is or was in the OCEAN PARTY.
Dylan also plays - it is said - with EMMA RUSSACK.
Lachlan Denton was a prime mover in THE OCEAN PARTY who were a very prolific young band who landed in Melbourne from WAGGA. A sad death in the band, Lachlans brother is a big part of this collectives story. This clip features Lachlan, Emma Russack and Snowy.
