UNDER THE WORLD
HARRY HOWARD with DAVID MCCLYMONT
”Harry and David's paths have crossed many times over the years. Together, they worked on a track back in 2014, and David was so taken by one of Harry's songs that he made a video for it back in 2016. But in reality, their on/off friendship has its seed way back in the murky days of living in London in the mid-1980s – Harry as a member of Crime and the City Solution and David as an ex-member of Orange Juice then mixing with the London ex-pat Australian community and playing a stint with Australian band The Moodists”.
Here is an hour long interview with David and Harry about the album and also touching on film and music and Australian culture as seen from an outsiders perspective.
David McClymont was once in Postcard Records band, Orange Juice as well as in the latterday Moodists for their last two EPS. (That was in 1985-87). Then there were years travelling the world and doing nothing in the music arena. In 2012 he suddenly started to produce music, learning new tech and releasing a dazzling array of solo works and collaborations. He released two CDs with the Scottish musician Momus and a steady stream of independent recordings as a solo performer and in collaboration with other artists. He recently released Centuries, a double vinyl retrospective on the Last Night From Glasgow label. All this is accessible via his Bandcamp Page.
As a songwriter I learned a lot from that last period of the Moodists from 1985-87 when David McClymont worked with us. He came from a different school or direction to us. He also brought Malcolm Ross into our orbit. I learned so much about songwriting and arrangement from both of them.
Harry Howard played in the second - 80s version - of Crime And The City Solution and then These Immortal Souls with his late brother, Rowland. Then there was the legendary Pink Stainless Tail. He the released three albums with Harry Howard and the NDE (featuring Clare Moore on drums and Dave Graney on vocals) before performing as DUET with then partner Edwina Preston, the electro collaboration that was ATOM and his first solo album Slight Pavilions.
Clare Moore and myself lived next door to Harry Howard in London for a period in the ‘80s and also played with him in Harry Howard and the NDE. That was a great experience, being in the rhythm section.
The album is available via BANDCAMP.

Just for fun- David McClymont and Orange Juice (and Coral Snakes) guitarist Malcolm Ross were passing by this ABC video shoot and were dragged further into the 80s British pop foreground.
Who woulda thunk we had a sleeper-cell operative, from the pre-C86 indie-schmindie scene in our midst all this time??! The bassline in 'rip it up' was very influential to my early teenage ears, up there with 'white lines' and 'love song'.
