this reminds me of when I was a young punk in the Earthmen playing our first gig at te Prince of Wales in the early 90s. Some common S.E Suburb junkie St.Kilda type, i think it was one of the completely shithouse 'sound guys' in the Piano Bar, yelled out that our lead singer had a 'soft cock'. So we played a thrashier tune and the bloke walked out - it was some sort of 'Ozzie pub rock' christening, we ended up playing downtown New York. But it was always more fun playing to kids in regional vic, the inner city venues were horrible and the other bands were vicious, competetive cunts. We played one of our first gigs with Hell To Pay, and were actually 'harder' sonically than them. Years later 'tough guy' Ian Rilen was sexually harrasing our guitarists girlfriend, our drummer - a bloke who grew up in Melbourne Bayside Chelsea and who punched me in the face because "I' had to sack him, even though he was my best mate in the band (!) - was gonna nut the cunt and I had to spend the rest of the night holding him back! Rilen was lucky he died before 'Me Too', I used to think he was 'Shtraya Own' Lou Reed, and his Sardine V stuff and final solo album are some of my favourite in 'Ocker Rock', but I found out decades later he was a violent sexual predator of the borderline Adrian Bayley variety.... Those cd's sit at my bottom shelf with all the early Bad Seeds albums...I have seen Rose Tattoo (or the Angry Anderson Experience) twice in Recent times, once at Musiclands Fawkner, and then at the Sandbelt in East Moorabin. The crowd were basically bald fat blokes in Kiss and Ac/DC 'power up' t-shirts. I can't say I spotted any Beasts of Burbon, Powdermonkeys, Hoss or Sadistik Execution fans there, but jeez they were a superbly drilled and heavy outfit and Agro at 80 is a superb relic of great Ocker rock singers, I mean he's probably the best ever (beside Bong Scott), and for fuck sake his biggest hit was the gayer than 80's Omo, 'coming out' power ballad, 'suddenly'! The reality is now, in 'Oz rock' the ladies run the show, tough guy rock is an odd curio for grown-up semi-retired nerds that have inherited their mums unit in Preston or Lara and are in the process of retiring in Thailand. Have you seen Wet Kiss? They're 'tough' and they fucken rock.
